Baroness Kinnock visits South Africa (02/11/2009)
Foreign Office Minister Baroness Kinnock is visiting South Africa on 2-4 November for wide ranging discussions with ministers and opinion formers in the region.
She will have discussions on climate change, trade, the Commonwealth and bilateral issues as well as seeing the state of preparedness for the 2010 World Cup and visiting British Council and other community based programmes.
During her visit Baroness Kinnock will deliver a speech at a Commonwealth Event at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Pretoria, a leading African Institute with a focus on human security.
She will also co-host an event launching the 4 degree Map in Africa. The map, which was launched in the UK by the Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Ed Miliband, the Minister for Climate Change, shows the devastating impact a global average temperature rise of 4 degrees could have on our future security and prosperity. This will be the first time it has been presented publicly in South Africa.
Visiting a Soweto School the Minister will participate in a 1Goal event. 1Goal is a civil society campaign aiming to use the first World Cup in Africa to mobilise the footballing community to exert pressure on governments and others to make sure the 75 million children in Africa who do not currently go to school get a chance to go.
During the visit she is due to meet South African ministers including Trade and Ministry Minister Rob Davies and the Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim, as well as other influential opinion formers in the region.
