How we can help

The British High Commission represents the British Government in its relations with the South African Government and promotes British interests in South Africa.

The High Commissioner, Dr Nicola Brewer, arrived in South Africa in June 2009. Her tasks – and those of her staff – are to present British policies to the South African Government and to South Africans, to report and explain South African policies and views to the British Government in London and to promote British interests. The High Commissioner is based in Pretoria but travels extensively throughout the country.

We have many different parts to the High Commission, from providing visa, consular and passport services, to engaging in political dialogue with the South African government.  Our High Commissioner, Dr Nicola Brewer, with her staff, engages at all levels throughout South African society.

Our offices in South Africa

These offices are each headed by a British Consul-General – Richard Wood in Cape Town, British Honorary Consul – Anthea Otto in Durban and a trade team in Durban. The Consul-General and their staff keep the High Commissioner in touch with political developments in their regions. They also promote trade and investment, working with UK Trade & Investment. In addition, the Consulate-General and the Honorary Consulate are responsible for consular protection of British citizens resident in (or visiting) their regions.
